Gainako on-line Newspaper (GON) Motto: Guardianship & Independence |
Today marks exactly two years since the brutal murder of a Hero, a National Icon, a human rights activist, and an unwavering freedom fighter who willingly gave up his life for his fellow citizens in pursuits of freedom and liberty. Deyda Hydra, the Founder of the widely read The Point Newspaper with the famous column "Good Morning Mr. President" was gunned down few yards away from a police station by an "unknown" gun men who cowardly hid behind darkness with their evil arsenals. The Jammeh government for two years has failed to put any credible effort to investigate this brutal murder which, made headlines in every corner of the world except the State House in Banjul. Deyda Hydra was known to be a fearless critic of the government for its human rights violation and unwarranted war against the media in the Gambia. The government and its agents had openly pursuit him and label him as enemy of the state because of his courageous work that challenged the regime for violating the constitutional rights of citizens. It is by all means the responsibility of the State to protect the lives of its citizens especially high profile caliber Journalist like Deyda Hydra. It is equally the sole responsibility of the State to investigate any ruthless crimes committed during its watch regardless of who is involved in the crime - friend or opponent of the regime. Failure of the State to commit meaningful resources to fully investigate such crimes constitutes nothing but conspiracies to aid and abide state sponsored organize crimes. The government's open secret blocking any international independent agencies from carrying out a thorough investigation of this heinous murder, speak volume about how high the stakes are for the regime in this case. The questions we at Gainako seriously direct at the government are simple and straight forward. If the government has nothing to hide, why don't you make full commitment to fully investigate this murder and all high profile related murders and bring the perpetrators to justice? Knowing fully well, Deyda's murder will always hunt you around, why don't you allow credible independent organizations to investigate this case and report their findings to the State? Why is the state blocking the release from the RVTH of the autopsy reports to the family who are so eager to know how their love one was murdered? How come the State continues to blame Deyda for his own death, when someone cowardly pierce bullets in his head at close range? Does the regime have guts to face Deyda's family and tell them in their eyes why they will not investigate the death of their love one? The answer to all these questions off course is the State's Guilt in the eye of public opinion until proven innocent. The burden of proof is on the regime to proof its innocence, and until credible investigations are carried out, this regime will always be directly responsible for Deyda's Murder. The government has a moral obligation to do everything in its powers to bring Deyda's killers to justice and also pay compensatory damages to the victim's family in the wrongful death of their love one. This is the moral thing to do and the whole world is watching the regime and expects nothing less. Finally, to brother Deyda, though they have physically taken you away from us, and from your closest angels, you are with us in spirit closer to our hearts and minds today than ever. The legacy you left behind is fully alive and has more strength and agility today than you had ever imagined. What you lived and gave up your life for can never be taken away, as it was for human dignity, liberty and lasting freedom of expression and association. The enemy who so mercilessly deprived you of the right to enjoy the love of life in the hands of your most beautiful dearest wife, your little angels, your dearest parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and fellow citizens, will always suffer under the hardship of this world until they finally face you in the here after. They will always live in agony, in fear, and terror as your good spirit will hunt them from every corner, every dark space, in their closets, when they close their eyes and everywhere they go until they finally depart this world in the harshest of manners. Brother Deyda, please rest in perfect peace in eternity. Good night sir, you are the bravest ever to live. We will always remember you… ................© Copyright, 2006: Gainako On-line Newspaper .
