HUMRA Condemns Arrest of Human Rights Defender in The Gambia

Human Rights for All(HUMRA) received with deep concern the recent arrest, detention
and trial of Mr.Edwin Nebolisa Nkawaeme the founder and  Director of African in
Democracy and Good governance by the Gambian authorities on charges of giving false information.

Mr.Edwin,s Nebolisa,s arrest and prosecution is of great concern to us .We fear he
might not be recieving free and fair trial considering the fact that his rights have
already been violated under the Gambia,s own 1997 constitution. The constitution of
the Gambia stipulates that any one arrested shall be taken to court within 72hours
or be release unconditionaly. Mr. Edwin have already spend eight good days in
detention before being hastly taken to court without notice.
This inccident is a disturbing reminder of president Yahya Jammeh,s sttatement last
August that he will cut off heads ofso-call Human rights defenders if they bend on
sabotaging his government.

HUMRA call on the Gambian authorites to discontinue the ADG director,s trial and
release him from police detention with immediate effect. Further more the government
of the Gambia should desist from mingling in with the works of Human rights
defenders in Gambia for this shows the bad image of the country.
